Hotel Del Coronado, S.Diego 125 Anniversary for the California's Legend

1888: Hotel founders, Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story, Jr., along with San Diego developer Alonzo Horton, survey Coronado beach, c. 1886. Although neither Babcock nor Story had experience in the hotel business, they were so inspired by the natural beauty of Coronado that they decided to buy the island and build a magnificent hotel, one that would be “the talk of the western world,” a hotel where “people will continue to come long after we are gone."  Con queste parole inizia la storia di uno dei piu' famosi hotel della storia americana. Il 2013 segna il 125 anniversario di una vera e propria leggenda l' "Hotel Del Coronado", oggi semplicemente "Hotel Del" tanto e' famoso nel mondo.

Si trova a San Diego, nella California meridionale e vanta un elenco di personalità' famose che vi hanno soggiornato per oltre un secolo. Senza fare particolari elenchi, peraltro lunghi, di nomi della storia e del cinema USA, ci limiteremo a ricordare alcuni di loro. Charles Lindbergh, Charlie Chaplin, Kirk Douglas, Ronald Reagan, Roosevelt, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford e Billy Wilder che nel 1958 ambiento' proprio qui buona parte del suo film "A qualcuno piace caldo" con Marylyn Monroe.

L' Hotel "Del" era nato come punto di villeggiatura di lusso in un' epoca in cui la California era ancora lontana come meta preferita per i viaggiatori della costa orientale che vi arrivavano in treno. E' stato uno tra i primi ad avere la corrente elettrica e altre comodità' non del tutto scontate per quell' epoca.

Oggi e' un hotel che ha mantenuto il suo stile architettonico vittoriano con il fascino d' altri tempi ma con tutte le comodità' e amenities di lusso possibili e immaginabili. Le sue camere in gran parte con vista sulla' Oceano Pacifico, si affacciano sulla bellissima spiaggia dell' isola di Coronado, località' rinomata con belle ville e nota per essere la sede dei Navy Seals, i famosi corpi speciali della marina USA impiegati nel raid contro Bin Laden.

I tramonti sulla spiaggia di S.Diego sono unici davvero suggestivi e perfetti per un momento romantico in coppia. L' Hotel "Del" e' la meta principale per molti matrimoni in America. Gli sposi arrivano da tutte le parti per sposarsi sulla spiaggia al tramonto.

L' Hotel "Del" ha preso da noi il punteggio più  alto per la qualità  delle accommodations e i servizi offerti. Adesso valuteremo se, come dicono, ha uno dei migliori ristoranti della citta' il "1500 Ocean" che vanta un gourmet addirittura di ispirazione italiana. Come sempre facciamo per i nostri lettori, la degustazione di un menu' a la carte per assegnare il nostro punteggio al ristorante e allo chef di turno.

La cena ha inizio con una novità' assoluta in USA, le chickpeas fries, tradotto patatine (ma senza le patate) di farina di ceci. Insomma sono panelle a forma di fries, patatine appunto. A cui diamo un 10/20 per l'idea originale. Abbinamento di vino era un' etichetta americana dal nome simpatico "Scarpetta" prodotto in Colorado, voto 15/20. Ottimo accostamento di un bollicine fruttato quasi Italiano e ben azzeccato con il gusto particolare della farina di ceci. Si prosegue con un piatto di crudo of the day, in questo caso yellow tuna, ben presentato, dal gusto delicato e piuttosto curato nelle note cromatiche del piatto. A questo abbiamo dato 15/20. Il pairing del vino era in questo caso un "Cape Mentelle" Margaret River del western Australia a cui senza indugio abbiamo assegnato un 20/20.

La cena e' continuata con un Wild Sea Bass al Cilantro ed Ananas in perfetto equilibrio di ingredienti, opposti tra loro, e coadiuvati dalla giusta potenza conferita da uno "Chardonnay 2011 Sonoma Coast" di classe 15/20 per entrambi vino e piatto. Il tutto con un finale dolce presentato con una fantasia di Cheesecake e Sorbetto al Cabernet molto delicati, voto 15/20. Il vino era un "Moscato Vietti" italiano a cui abbiamo dato 20/20. Servizio al tavolo ottimo da parte di John Olson a cui diamo 20/20. Lo chef Robert Hohmann merita una media complessiva di 20/20 per il perfetto accostamento dei vini, le creazioni dei piatti e il servizio impeccabili oltre al merito di utilizzare aromi ed erbette direttamente coltivati davanti al ristorante. Il "1500 Ocean" e' un indirizzo da non perdere a S.Diego.

Highlights! Un' alternativa al ristorante e' un bell' aperitivo al tramonto e subito dopo un falo' con la famiglia con delizie dolci da preparare sul fuoco direttamente vicino al mare sulla bellissima e leggendaria spiaggia.

When the sun goes down, the spirits aboard the Queen Mary come out to play. Explore the legendary ship with a series of twilight tours and séances that explore the haunted past and paranormal activity that the Queen Mary is known for. Halloween is just started...!

La Queen Mary venne costruita nel 1936 in Inghilterra: era nata come nave da crociera, più grande e veloce del Titanic; il 27 maggio 1936, un’astrologa – Mabel Fortescue-Harrison – predisse il suo destino con la famosa frase :” La Queen Mary, varata oggi, conoscerà la sua più grande fama e popolarità quando non navigherà più un altro miglio e non porterà mai più un altro passeggero pagante”. La Queen Mary ospitò diverse celebrità, fra le quali Churchill, i duchi di Windsor, Fred Astaire, Liz Taylor e la Dietrich; allo scoppiare della seconda guerra mondiale, essa venne “arruolata” come tante altre sue simili, per effettuare il trasporto di soldati americani in Europa. La Queen Mary, ritinteggiata completamente di grigio, divenne il “Fantasma Grigio” e grazie alla sua velocità riuscì a trasportare migliaia di soldati in Europa, sfuggendo sistematicamente ai sottomarini tedeschi. Fu proprio durante uno di questi viaggi, che si verificò il primo incidente che diede poi adito a storie “paranormali”: l’intero tragitto del Fantasma Grigio veniva monitorato da incrociatori militari i quali avevano il compito di difendere la nave in caso di attacco. Poichè gli incrociatori, per protocollo, dovevano muoversi a zig zag, capitò che la Queen Mary entrasse in rotta di collisione con una di queste navi. il Curacoa; ne sfondò letteralmente la fiancata, riportando solo qualche danno a prua (mentre il Curacoa colò a picco); il Fantasma Grigio fu costretto ad avanzare senza prestar soccorso ai trecento marinai dispersi in acqua, ond’evitare di diventare un bersaglio fin troppo facile e rischiare l’uccisione di altri uomini. Gli studiosi di paranormale che hanno visitato la Queen Mary, sono convinti che essa conservi una sorta di “memoria psichica” di tale incidente e che questa sia la causa i rumori di schiantare di lamiere che si avvertono nella notte su di essa.

Altre voci parlano della presenza del fantasma di Winston Churchill, il quale amava particolarmente questa nave, e di strane manifestazioni come porte che si aprono e chiudono da sole, quadri rovesciati, allarmi che si mettono in funzione senza motivo e misteriose figure che nottetempo si aggirano sul ponte sparendo nel nulla poco dopo.

Ma ci sono ben altre presenze, molto più definite nelle loro apparizioni e manifestazioni, delle quali si è iniziato a parlare intorno al 1966, anno in cui la Queen Mary venne ancorata a Long Beach in California e trasformata in attrazione turistica: durante i lavori di riadattamento non solo venne rinvenuto uno scheletro umano (mai identificato), ma perse la vita il giovane marinaio John Pedder, schiacciato dalla chiusura del portellone numero 13 nella Shaft Alley. Il fantasma di Pedder è quello che viene avvistato più spesso e più nitidamente. Diversi visitatori e anche una guida turistica lo hanno descritto con dovizia di particolari: un giovane uomo con la barba folta, i capelli neri corti, grandi occhi verdi, pelle diafana e una tuta da manutentore.

Un altro fantasma che spesso si è fatto vedere, soprattutto nei dintorni degli alloggi degli ufficiali, è quello di William Stark, un ufficiale morto nel 1949 per aver bevuto erroneamente dell’acido contenuto in una bottiglia di gin. Nelle cucine invece si aggira lo spettro di un cuoco, ucciso nel 1943 per le sue pessime doti culinarie (l’episodio della sua uccisione è documentato storicamente).

C’è una stanza della nave, la B-340, nella quale sarebbe morto un uomo in passato; nessuno vi mette piede a causa di strane manifestazioni (probabilmente poltergeist) che hanno terrorizzato chi vi si è avvicinato: una delle tante testimonianze è quella di un ragazzo il quale sotto gli occhi di tre testimoni ha inalato una strana sostanza fumosa che usciva proprio da quella stanza ed è rimasto paralizzato per diversi secondi, cosciente.

Esistono dell ghost camera, ovvero delle web cam perennemente puntate su luoghi infestati Guarda il video. Una di queste è fissa sulla piscina della Queen Mary, uno dei punti dove si sono visti più fantasmi. In particolare quello di una bambina, che è morta spezzandosi il collo in seguito ad una brutta caduta proprio nei pressi della piscina. Pare che la si veda spesso aggirarsi alla ricerca della madre o della sua bambola. Sul luogo sono morte anche altre due donne che spesso vengono intraviste passeggiare in costume da bagno d’epoca, oppure lasciano impronte di piedi bagnati intorno alla piscina.

La Queen Mary è stata trasformata in questi ultimi anni in hotel. Se qualcuno di voi si sente abbastanza coraggioso da provare a trascorrerci una notte, troverà' cabine molto confortevoli e a prezzi ragionevoli. Per Halloween ci sono eventi speciali, ma anche il resto dell' anno e' possibile fare un Ghost Tour con tanto di esperti a bordo.

Il museo dedicato alla Principessa Diana Spencer completa la già' interessante visita alla nave dove e' possibile anche pranzare o semplicemente bere un aperitivo.

Anno speciale il 2013 per la California, si celebrano ben tre anniversari di hotel leggendari lungo la west coast. Travelscore Magazine ha dedicato a ciascuno dei tre un servizio individuale che presentiamo in questa speciale edizione autunnale dedicata ai nostri lettori Italiani. Questo e' solo un assaggio, un piccolo trailer, di quello che stiamo per pubblicare in questa stagione. Si tratta dell' "Hotel del Coronado" a San Diego, La nave hotel "Queen Mary" a Long Beach e "The Ahwahnee Resort" a Yosemite National Park.

Stratosphere Tower "Top of the World" Restaurant in Las Vegas

Lo Stratosphere Las Vegas è un hotel casinò situato al 2000 Las Vegas Blvd. South, sulla Las Vegas Strip, nella città di Las Vegas, in Nevada. La struttura è dotata di 2.444 stanze d'albergo e ha una superficie dedicata al gioco d'azzardo pari a circa 7.000 m². La sua famosa torre alta 1.149 piedi (circa 350 m) è anche la più alta torre panoramica di tutti gli USA e fornisce una visione unica della città di Las Vegas. Giriamo il mondo da anni e abbiamo recensito vari ristoranti panoramici di questo tipo. La regola vorrebbe che si mangi a livello turistico, ma questa volta abbiamo trovato l' eccezione. Il "top of the world" e' stratosferico come il nome della torre dove e' ubicato. Consiglio vivamente l' agnello di montagna del Colorado abbinato magnificamente ad un cous cous marocchino di classe gourmet. Anche i desserts, che viaggiano accanto a voi, mentre cenate, su pianale che si sposta in cerchio. In realta' siete voi a spostarvi perche' il ristorante gira (1h circa per un giro intero su Las Vegas). Ampia scelta di vini che, a richiesta, possono essere abbinati dallo chef. Consiglio sicuramente questa opzione perche' puo' essere davvero arduo effettuare un unico abbinamento di vino a piatti cosi' diversi tra loro. Il giovane sous chef di S.Francisco sa il fatto suo anche in tema di portate iniziali che suggerisce lui stesso... a patto che lo lasciate fare! Ottimo anche per i bambini che dopo cena possono divertirsi al piano di sopra con le varie attrazioni presenti. Alcune sono destinate agli adulti perche' si tratta veramente di "vita spericolata" ad alto impatto emotivo, tra queste una free fall tower chiamata Big Shot e una "giostra" chiamata Insanity che fa roteare velocemente i suoi passeggeri tenendoli sospesi nel vuoto. Big Shot a 329 metri di altezza, la più alta torre a caduta libera del mondo. Insanity, a 270 metri di altezza, che prima vi lascia dondolare nel vuoto, e poi vi fa girare come una trottola a più di 50 chilometri all’ora. X-Scream, a 264 metri di altezza, un roll coster fuori… dall’ordinario. SkyJump, un Bungee jumping controllato. Le prime tre attrazioni costano 15 dollari, mentre un salto dal cielo costa 110 dollari, ma visto che occorre comunque pagare la salita alla torre, conviene acquistare un value pack, tra i 23 e 34 dollari. La sola salita in cima costa 18 dollari per gli adulti, 10 per i ragazzi.

Forte Village Resort the King of Thalassotherapy

It is not a dream but is real, an island in another island (Sardinia, Italy) which is immerse in lush tropical and mediterranean park. Located in S. Margherita di Pula, south west of the Italian city of Cagliari and near to its international airport, the "Forte Village" resort is without doubt one of the best spot on the planet and it is part of the "Leading Hotels & SPA of the World". As usual we personally tested its quality and services since our first visit on 1998, updated in 2005 and actually. This time we focused on its SPA and Thalassotherapy, including our habitual rating on gourmet offered at the location. We had a two days week-end experience in their legendary sea salted water pools, including a couple of significant massage body treatments. Concerning the food we enjoyed the "Forte Gourmet" restaurant with its signature chef "Rocco Iannone" and that night we had even the chance to test also the fabulous champagne wines of "Alain Thienot" which was part of the meal courses.

Let's start to describe the fantastic mediterranean menu that chef Rocco Iannone matched with the wide selection of important champagne labels of the French maison "Alain Thienot". Amouse bouche: Raw Seafood paired with an Alain Thienot Brut flute, followed right after by Warm Prawns, artichokes and bottarga and a glass of fantastic Alain Thienot Rose'. This one was a pure magic match of Iannone in one of the most challenging pairing that is always hard in presence of the artichokes slightly sweet taste. The next is a Tossed risotto with tomato, mozzarella and marinated scampi and the wine is a Alain Thienot Millesime' 2005. Fourth course is a Amberjack, porcini mushrooms, white asparagus braised with pesto "Genovese" sauce accompanied with a grand cru Alain Thienot 2002. A fresh fruit dessert ends this magnificent dinner and reveals the ability of Iannone to keep a high level in every step of these courses. We are talking about a Strawberry gele' with pineapple and anise sorbet.

Chef Rocco Iannone is a young capable Michelin firmament star and although he has been quite often criticized by some of the Italian journalists gourmet establishment (in which I have been trained,too) for its extreme cooking simplicity using the fresh ingredients as unique resource of a high gourmet philosophy. He avoids an excessive interpretation of the Italian traditional recipes, especially those which are originated in southern Italy where he was born and grown up. I personally think that some of my colleagues are too oriented at the sophistication of the gourmet, a fashion excessively flown in the last decade. It's time to give back the right space to young guys like Rocco who proudly comes from a southern Italy's traditional farmers family. The honesty of the ingredients, not overwhelmed by the temptation to change them for justify a velleity interpretation, is the secret and greatness of Iannone. Our score is definitively a 20/20.

Beside the "Forte Gourmet" restaurant there are others like the "Gordon Ramsay" a recent gem added by the property's management leaded by General Director Lorenzo Giannuzzi, a milestone of Forte Village success. The undiscussed fame of chef Gordon Ramsay attract those who like to find an international perspective of the Italian recipes interpreted by this well known cousine TV star.

His restaurant is located next to one of the several kind of hotel accommodations available at FV, the Castello is faced to the Mediterranean sea and has beautiful terrace views.

Starting from the above introduction of the Thalassotherapy concept we tried all the pools available at FV as described further on in this article. But we would highlight a couple of treatments that we enjoyed and relaxed so much: the "4-hand Forte Massage" and the "Salt and honey massage". The first one is a synchronized heavenly four hands massage made by two women with knowledge and experience capable to detect your body issues and work on them softly or hardly at your choice. The second one is rejuvenating session which uses two different and opposite elements like the sweet honey of Sardinia and the salt of mediterranean sea. Our final score for these two experience together with the Thalassotherapy pools circuit is at the maximum of our scale and is undoubtedly a 20/20.
